I don't think they look so bad! Much better on sedans than coupes, with the black rather than the color-matching trim.
I have yet to spot you around town but I keep an eye out!
Since you asked, I personally don't like they way they look on an E46. But if you need the functionality for your sitch, I say go for it.

I'll be curious to see how mud flaps on an e46 turn out, a quick google search didn't really show much.
Now if you had this I'm sure there would be less debate about mud flaps... They are almost a necessity on a subie
