The ZHP is the ultimate daily driver and you need a track car. The M just makes sense.

Your Zhp is one of my fav! I read your project thread form the beginning to the end and I really like the mods you have done.

Good luck on the sale and the new purchase!

It's not the car you drive, it's how you drive it.

If you have $8-12K budgeted just to being faster on the track then have at it. At least an M3 shouldn't depreciate as much when it's time to sell, of you do.

The ///M tax is high on mods but with patience you can keep the costs down to just a bit more than 330 mods.

A properly setup E46 M3 with about $2-3K into suspension, $2K for wheels/tires, another $1K for rod bearing maintenance, $1.5K for RACP/subframe (maybe more for bushings), $1K for vanos and exhaust hub tab bullet proofing, $4K carbon intake/headers and tune, should get you on a good start to being able to start keeping up with higher end, moderately experienced GT3s on the track.

Bang for buck can probably be had elsewhere but I know E46 M ownership can be more of an emotional decision rather than full logic. LOL

That sounds about right. That puts me into about $30k range assuming I probably will find one at $18k or so.

At $30k, I can probably spend a little bit more and get a E90 M3. Throw some Swift Spec R springs, camber plates + rims/tires and I got a car that is already faster than my ZHP by many seconds.

It's a touch decision because the E46 M3 and the E9x M3s are getting within 5-6k of each other.

    Derbo's ZHP

E90M you'll want some way aggressive pads and fluid. My friend has an E46M and an E90M that are both tracked. The big difference in the "heavier" E90 is that it needs way bigger brakes for high-speed tracking. After two laps of a 1.4 mile road course track built to FIA standards, the E90M brakes are overheating and need to be cooled.

You'll have to deal with similar rod bearing issues as S54. Two throttle actuators need replacing within short intervals which are $1000 each if I remember.

If you daily drive an E90 S65 expect fuel costs to be dramatically more over a ZHP (12-14MPG City and 18 Hwy). If you daily an E46M, fuel will be more similar with a couple MPG decrease. I get around 20MPG suburb/city and upwards of 30 on the highway with the S54. Sometimes if the weather is right and traffic conditions permit I'll surpass 30. Max I've gotten on a long straight trip was 34MPG.

It won't be daily driven since I have a Honda Civic for that. Since I started commuting for work, the mileage on the ZHP dramatically dropped. One year it was down to 1500 miles for the year.

    My assumption for the E9x:
-Rod bearings will be done by me if it has not been done by PO, $800 for parts? unsure about Labor
-Throttle actuators are $650 each from FCP Euro, so about $1300 in parts alone and the DIY looks fairly straight forward. I wonder how long they last?
-Brakes were definitely going to be an issue in both cars. I would most likely go with AP Racing and/or StopTech BBK with some GLoc R12 pads or Carbotech XP12s or PFC01/06s.
    -Maintenance (Cooling, bushings, etc)
    -Rims/Tires (Probably do Apex EC7s)

    My assumption for the E46:
    -Rod Bearings
    -Vanos Hub
-Subframe (if not done, Vince subframe reinforcement)
-Suspension (I probably shell out for MCS 2WNR)
-Brakes (Most likely a Stoptech BBK)
    -Maintenance (Cooling, Bushings, etc)
-Rims/Tires (Varies but I would like the APEX setup again)

It's really a moot point since the car is going to be driven as a weekend/HDPE car. I like the design of the E46 but its so hard to find a nice one for a price not close to the E90.

3200 vs 3700 seems like very little in weight difference but I can definitely see that being a problem with brakes.
